PSC Mini Lesson 8

Lexical choice

Lexical choice matters in PSC Written Expression, where the most accurate word must fit both the meaning and the register of the sentence, and it can also affect Reading Comprehension, where an incorrect answer may come from choosing a word that is close in meaning but not appropriate in context.

Why this matters on the PSC test

Lexical choice is about choosing the appropriate French word, not just a word that resembles the intended meaning. On the PSC test, the wrong answer may be a near-synonym, a homophone, or a word that exists in French but does not fit the sentence.

Core rule

The correct answer must express the intended meaning clearly and naturally in formal written French.

Correct word: réciprocité
Wrong but familiar: réciproque
Correct noun: matériaux
Wrong choice: a different noun that does not fit

The question is not only “Is this a real word?” It is also “Is this the right word here?”

une traversée sécuritaire

l’évolution des besoins

Common PSC traps

  • A real word, but the wrong one: the option exists in French, but it does not convey the intended meaning.
  • Homophones or near-homophones: the form may sound similar but refer to a different idea.
  • Wrong part of speech: an adjective may appear where a noun is required, or the reverse.
  • Administrative usage: the PSC often prefers the form that is most natural in formal institutional French.
  • Distractors that look plausible: several options may seem acceptable at first glance, but only one fits both meaning and context.
